AI means the Death of Specialization
Insects don't do office jobs
It’s slowly becoming obvious, based on what’s happening in IT, that doing one thing very well probably isn’t a thing a large number of people with “white collar jobs” will be happy with in the AI era.
It’s still very likely that there will always be a need for a really, really extreme specialists, but the criteria for that kind of thing will have a radical cliff - basically: “can you be replaced by existing AI tools.” If no - you’re needed.
Of course, this is still speculation - the world isn’t yet settled on what will happen.
A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.
(Wikipedia says the “better than a master of one” part appeared in the 21st century)
This post was inspired by a Reddit post that said “AI is taking my job as a programmer and that’s the only thing I know how to do.”
